The Unidata Program Center is pleased to announce the opening of the 2013 Unidata Community Equipment Awards solicitation. Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2013, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.
Past recipients of Unidata equipment awards have used the grants to procure equipment for data sharing, to create interactive data visualization laboratories, and to encourage the use of Unidata software packages in research and education. For the 2013 grants, special consideration will be given to proposals that:
- Include installation of a prototype AWIPS II standalone EDEX server and CAVE client, coupled with the Unidata LDM, to test data ingest and display both locally, and using the CAVE thin client to connect to remote servers.
- Include installation of a standalone data server (preferably in the Eastern U.S.) running a suite of Unidata software packages including LDM, McIDAS, RAMADDA, THREDDS/TDS to ingest, decode, and serve data to the Unidata community. The data served should include data from real-time IDD/LDM feeds and may include data from local observations, data from local modeling efforts, case study collections, and climate data.
The deadline for submitting proposals is March 15, 2013. The Unidata Program Center expects to notify submitters of award status by May 2013.
