Post-doctoral Position in Hurricane Modeling and Data Assimilation at OU

University of Oklahmoa

The School of Meteorology of University of Oklahoma has an opening for a post-doctoral research associate/research scientist to study the impact of outflow on hurricane intensification through ensemble-based data assimilation and ensemble simulations. This work will be performed at University of Oklahoma in collaboration with scientists in Naval Research Laboratory at Monterey.

Duties will include:

  • Applying ensemble-based data assimilation and ensemble simulation systems to investigate the impact of outflow on TC intensity and predictability of TC intensification
  • Study the impact of data from HS3 field experiments on the estimation and prediction of TC outflow
  • Extend ensemble-based data assimilation and simulation system to include multiple numerical models and study the role of using multiple models in predicting outflow and in understanding the impact of outflow on TC intensification
  • Run extensive series of numerical experiments and diagnostics for selected hurricanes
  • Publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals

Desired Qualifications include:

  • Ph.D. in atmospheric science or related discipline
  • Experience in numerical modeling of meso/convective scales (preferably tropical cyclones)
  • Background in atmospheric data assimilation
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Fortran 90/95 programming experience in UNIX/LINUX environment
  • Familiarity with scripting and plotting languages

Salary will be competitive based on experience and qualification. The University of Oklahoma offers competitive benefits. Position is open now until filled and full consideration will be given to applications received by 1 May 2014.
