Unidata Update: June 2018

We've just wrapped up the triennial Unidata Users Workshop in Boulder. Keep an eye on the News@Unidata blog for a summary of the goings-on at the workshop.

NetCDF operators (NCO) version 4.7.5

NCO

Version 4.7.5 of the netCDF Operators (NCO) has been released. NCO is an Open Source package that consists of a dozen standalone, command-line programs that take netCDF files as input, then operate (e.g., derive new data, average, print, hyperslab, manipulate metadata) and output the results to screen or files in text, binary, or netCDF formats.

Welcome Summer Intern Hailey Johnson

Hailey Johnson

Hailey Johnson joined the Unidata Program Center as a software development summer intern on May 21, 2018. Hailey is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences with a minor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. Her dissertation research focuses on numerical methods and applications in coastal sciences, concentrating on improvements to numerical modeling of coastline evolution. Her main goal during her internship will be improving the THREDDS Data Server user experience, primarily through a redesign of the TDS web interface.

Welcome Summer Intern Jonathan Thielen

Jon Thielen

Jonathan Thielen joined the Unidata Program Center as a software development summer intern on May 21, 2018. Jonathan will be a senior this fall at Iowa State University, majoring in meteorology and mathematics. His current research revolves around WRF sensitivity studies, focusing on convective morphology of mesoscale convective systems. This summer, Jon will be working on further integrating xarray into MetPy and implementing cross section functionality.

AWIPS 17.1.1-6 Released

AWIPS

Unidata AWIPS 17.1.1-6 was released on 12 June 2018. This is a minor release with several fixes.

Free Weather & Climate Data Webinar

ESRI

Esri, makers of the popular ArcGIS geographic information system software package, hosted a webinar aimed at learning how to transform weather and climate data into actionable information on 20 June 2018.

Call for Abstracts: AGU Session on Geoscience Cyberinfrastructure

The 2018 AGU Fall Meeting will be held 10-14 December 2018 in Washington, DC. This year the Earth and Space Science Informatics (ESSI) section will include a session that may be of special interest to Unidata community members: “IN039: Goldilocks and Geoscience Cyberinfrastructure: Challenges and Opportunities for Increasing Engagement of Geoscientists in Cyberinfrastructure Efforts, and Finding the balance between community-led efforts and top-down direction.”

The Unidata Program Center is seeking new people to serve on Unidata's Strategic Advisory and Users Committees. This is your chance to make a difference on behalf of the Unidata community. As Sepideh Yalda, the current Chair of the Unidata Strategic Advisory Committee notes, “Unidata has and continues to serve a critical role in providing data and services to the earth and related sciences community. The opportunity to serve as a member on Unidata governance committees provides you with the ability to contribute and help guide the future developments in data sharing and the associated services in support of research and education in atmospheric sciences.”
