Marcos Hermida joined the Unidata Program Center software development staff on January 30th, 2012. Marcos comes to Unidata from MeteoGalicia, the regional meteorology agency for Galicia, Spain.
After earning a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 2000, Marcos began work as a researcher and programmer for projects dealing with air quality and development of environmental support decision tools. "Since my very first days of work I have been involved with scientific data distribution systems and scientific data formats," Marcos says. "This is how I have known Unidata since 2002." Marcos went on to earn a second Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering in 2008.
In 2004, Marcos joined the IT team at MeteoGalicia as a software engineer. "Working in such a small meteorology agency, you really realize of how important Unidata's open source and support policies are," says Marcos. Unidata's open, community-focused programs give scientists and developers from all around the world the chance to share and distribute their data — whether the organization they are part of is large or small.
"After eight years being on the Unidata's client side, crossing the Atlantic Ocean from one corner of Europe to be inside this community is, probably, the most challenging and exciting enterprise I could face in my career," Marcos says of his decision to join the team at the Unidata Program Center. He's excited by the challenges he sees Unidata facing as well: "to keep improving and developing data services and tools that help researchers around the world to solve problems that range from local to global."
For Marcos, it's hard to imagine a more meaningful job. "As a developer and software engineer at the Unidata Program Center, I am quite excited to get involved in the current efforts to foster open source development communities and Agile software development methodologies. Although we are taking the very first steps to implement an Agile software development cycle, those efforts will contribute to both improving what we deliver to our community and incorporating all the contributions from the community members."
Please join us in welcoming Marcos to the Unidata Program Center!
