At GFDL, we're reviving FFIO for SGI's Origin and Altix systems (we no
longer have a CRAY). Speedups of 13x (read) and 9x (write) have been
seen on the Origins by setting the NETCDF_FFIOSPEC environment variable
to 'cache:256:2'. Regression tests (on the Origins) are in progress and
show no errors yet. The bufa and mr FFIO layers doesn't seem to work,
though.
The Altix port builds and runs, but is yet to be tested for stability
and performance.
We've augmented ffio.c and ncio.c to use a new macro SGI_FFIO, since SGI
offers a C interface to the 'assign' environment. xdiff-ing these files
shows that not much changed vis-a-vis the netcdf-3.6.0-p1 originals.

Stay tuned for the remaining tests.
