As a followup - using --enable-logging gives me no further information than
the original 'HDF error' message. It seems to have something to do with
the number of variables or the total size of the file. The file should have
625 variables, I find that if I write 501 variables it works fine, 502
generates the error. In each case I am defining the header for the full
set of variables so the limit is hit on the actual write, not the define.
The file size with 501 variables is 39003468. I don't have any problem
writing with netcdf3 or with pnetcdf.
