Reminder: Unidata 2016 Community Equipment Awards

Equipment Awards
Unidata offers equipment grants to support a variety of projects

Just a reminder that the 2016 Unidata Community Equipment Awards solicitation is open for new proposals through March 25, 2016. If you're looking for equipment (physical hardware or cloud-based services) to get your Unidata technology project off the ground, we encourage you to submit a proposal.

Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2016, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.

Community Survey: Give Unidata your thoughts

Unidata Users
YOU are the Unidata community

As a community-governed program, Unidata depends on guidance and feedback from educators, researchers, and students in the atmospheric and related sciences. The Unidata Community Survey seeks your feedback both on existing Unidata services and possible future directions for the program. Your ideas will help inform Unidata's path forward; your participation is much appreciated.

If you've already responded, thank you for providing your input. If you haven't responded yet, there's still time to do so!

Did El Niño cause a blizzard?

In case you missed it: Unidata's Jeff Weber contributed to an NPR segment aired on 27 January 2016 discussing the connection (if any) between this season's big El Niño event and last weekend's winter storm Jonas.

You can listen to the segment or read the transcript on NPR's web site.

NetCDF-Fortran 4.4.3

Version 4.4.3 of the NetCDF-Fortran library is now available. This is primarily a compatibility release that addresses a false negative introduced by netCDF-C 4.4.0 with netCDF-Fortran 4.4.2. If you have tried to use netCDF-Fortran 4.4.2 with netCDF-C 4.4.0 and received a test failure in nf_test and nf03_test, you can safely ignore these failures.

Information about the release is available in the Unidata's NetCDF-Fortran GitHub site.

Source-code zip and tar.gz archives can be found here.

NetCDF 4.4.0

Version 4.4.0 of the NetCDF-C library is now available.

Highlights of this release include:

  • Added CDM-5 support.
  • Added support for opening in-memory file content.
  • Modified CMakeLists.txt to work with the re-organized cmake configuration used by the latest HDF5, 1.8.16, on Windows. Before this fix, netCDF would fail to locate hdf5 1.8.16 when using cmake on Windows.
  • Modified ncgen to properly handle the L and UL suffixes for integer constants to keep backward compatibility.
